Hey:
My husband and I are planning our first trip to Cape May. We are going to be there only for a short weekend ... get there Friday night and leave from there Sunday afternoon/evening.
Needed some advice ...
1. Did some reseach on the hotels ... was thinking of either La Mer or The Grand ... what do you all suggest? We are looking for a quiet/peaceful place near a good section of the peace. Do we need to book in advance or it being off season we can walk in and get something? Also do they normally give better prices if you walk in and there are vacancies?
2. What are the Cape May must dos in a day? How is the water going to be?
3. Any tours/cruises recommended? Also read about the carriage rides in Cape May, has someone tried those? How long are they and normally how much does it cost?
Any thoughts, recommedations would be much appereciated.
Thanks in advance,
Smili
Help with Cape May trip Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 ...My husband and I did the carriage ride 2 summers ago. It was alot of fun and we learned alot. They teach you alot of really neat things about Cape May. If I remember right it was about 45 minutes long but I cant remember the exact cost. I do remember it being more then $25 though, but worth it in my opinion. Cape May is great, you are going to have a great time. We really enjoyed going the the Lighthouse, I would recommend that as a Must do for your first trip.
Help with Cape May trip Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 ...Hi,
We%26#39;ll be there the same weekend. We%26#39;re heading down with our dog. This will be the first time traveling with him.
I haven%26#39;t stayed at La Mer, but we%26#39;ve stayed at Grand Hotel. It%26#39;s nice enough, and right across the street from the ocean in a convenient location. Have you checked in to any of the B%26amp;B%26#39;s? Their prices are a bit lower at this time of year. Our favorite is The Mission Inn, which is just behind The Grand Hotel. You can tour the whole Inn on their website at missioninn dot net.
I%26#39;d imagine the water will be cold. We were planning to let the dog frolic, but I don%26#39;t think we%26#39;ll be going in. (BTW, Grand has an indoor pool.) (But Mission Inn has hottubs in the rooms!) Carriage rides are fun. If you check on the Chamber of Commerce site you should be able to find some tour information and see what%26#39;s going on this weekend, specifically.
We always walk Washington St. Mall and check out the shops. You can head over to the lighthouse for their sunset celebration, too. Amazing restaurants in town as well. The Washington Inn is our favorite, and we plan to go back on Saturday evening for dinner.
Hope this helps,
Lori
Here%26#39;s the carriage co. website-

You Have got to try Breakfast at The Mad Batter E X C E L L A N T, also give The Ugly Mug a shot. and of course there is The Lobster House. As far as reservations There is no longer a off season
we were down in August sans reservations and had a hard time finding a place. We lucked out at a little place on 1st street called the Sand Pebble. It was great. Also try the Coachman or the Capri.
If you have time take the ferry to Lewes and go outlet shopping. And don%26#39;t forget to go to sunset beach%26gt; Have FUN
Thank you all for your advice. Carriage rides seem interesting we will probably do it. The only thing is my husband is down with cold, so I a no longer sure whether it will be this weeked or we will have to postpone it. About hotels not yet sure, I am petrified of pets so am trying to stay somewhere where pets are not allowed. Sunet Beach defi on the agenda. Are there cruises/para sailing around that time?
We are vegetarians, sorry forgot to mention that in my earlier post, will have to look for food options accordingly.
Any more suggestions, please feel free.
Thanks again.
Most places do not allow pets. There are no pets at The Grand Hotel or most of the other B%26amp;B%26#39;s. Do not wind up at Marquis de Lafayette, as they do have pet-friendly accommodations. Also, many of the restaurants offer a vegetarian option on the menu each evening, so I think you%26#39;ll be okay with dining as well. My husband and I seem to be coming down with colds as well. But for our GSD%26#39;s sake, we%26#39;re taking lots of Comtrex and vitamin C so he can have his doggie weekend in Cape May.
Feel better!
smili - Have you considered staying at a bed %26amp; breakfast inn instead of a hotel? I would highly recommend it for a romantic weekend. I think they are a good value because they include breakfast, afternoon tea, and often other amenities. I recommend The Manor House for an awesome breakfast. You could stay anywhere in town and be close to everything.
My must do%26#39;s for a day are: a bike ride, a walk on the beach, lunch on the go from Tommy%26#39;s Hot Dogs, dinner (BYO!), shopping, and an evening walk on the promenade and beach. There are bike rental places all over and I suggest renting bikes if the weather is nice because it is a great way to get around and see all of the Victorian buildings.
I%26#39;m sure there will be plenty of vegetarian options for you. (Oh yeah, skip Tommy%26#39;s Hot Dogs I guess). There are so many restaurants and most of them have a menu posted outside so you can check and see if there are some appealing choices for you before going in. Check out Bella Vida Cafe at 406 Broadway for vegetarian menu options.
You will love Cape May. It is a great destination for a couple%26#39;s getaway. Very romantic and plenty of things to do or just relax.
I really hope you enjoy your trip! Check back in with a trip report and let us know your impressions of Cape May.
get resv., stay away from the Lafette, we%26#39;ve swam 3 out of 4 years, usally in the high 70%26#39;s, so many restaraunts.
My husband %26amp; I just visited cape may last week. It%26#39;s was great. We stayed at the Linda Lee%26#39;s Bed %26amp; Breakfast. Wonderful B%26amp;B, great breakfast very romantic and quiet. We stayed in Julie%26#39;s room. Breakfast was great. Very quiet street. They provide parking and bikes. We rode on bikes all around town. Definitely go to the Lighthouse and Sunset Beach. At Sunset beach there%26#39;s a spectacular signt around 7 pm. Check with locals at what time is the sunset. The Cove, you will see the surfers. We ate at Gecko on Washington Square, great spicy food. Take the carriage ride it is worth it ($40, 1/2 hour). Take it a night. Do not take the whale and dolphin watching cruise. It%26#39;s too long and you can see the dolphins from the beach. We didn%26#39;t see any whales and it felt like forever just to get back. Prices are pretty good at the B%26amp;B, there%26#39;s a special book two nights and get one of the nights 50% off. We ate at the Althea%26#39;s at the Inn of Cape May. Very romantic. Ask to be sitted inside not in the enclosed porch.
Dear all:
