Atlantic City August casino winnings rise 4.5 pct
LOS ANGELES, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey, won 4.5 percent more money from gamblers in August compared with a year earlier, the state%26#39;s Casino Control Commission said on Monday.
Casinos%26#39; gambling winnings totaled $494.4 million during the month, the state regulator said.
The 12 casinos in the second-largest U.S. gambling market saw their slot machine revenue rise 3.4 percent to $363.5 million, while table game winnings rose 7.9 percent to $130.9 million.
For the first eight months of the year, casinos won $3.5 billion from gamblers, up 4.1 percent over the same period last year.
Atlantic City casinos are trying to transform the seaside resort into an entertainment destination like Las Vegas, adding hotel rooms, shopping and dining to a mix still dominated by gambling.
