You are somewhat correct in your assessment that ';nobody knows';--Only the casino knows the true answer.
I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll hear anecdotes about adventures on $5 and $10 machines, but the firm statistical evidence--reported slot machine payback by casino--is only based on overall averages, NOT by denomination.
On that basis, the Taj is actually second-best in AC for paybacks, based on the NJCCC report for the year ended 6/30/05:
CASINO
PAYBACK
Borgata
92.5
Trump Taj Mahal
92.1
Trump Plaza
92.0
A.C. Hilton
92.0
Trump Marina
91.9
Harrah’s
91.9
Resorts
91.8
Bally’s A.C
91.8
Sands
91.5
Tropicana
91.5
Caesars
91.2
Showboat
90.9
Five dollar slots
I play $5 slots a lot and my best luck has always been in Ballys Gold Room. Second best for me was Taj, even though I don%26#39;t really like the room. Worst has always been Caesars -- can%26#39;t hit a darn thing on their $5 slots
Slot Payout Percentages are reported by denomination . You can get this information in magazines such as Slots Only , Casino Gambler , and others . Check Borders , B%26amp;N, or local magazine rack . In fact the payout information for $5 %26amp; $10 machines is more accurate than the nickel and Quarter machines because there are many fewer of them to average . Just be aware that that the average actual payouts of the reported previous month may , or may not include certain seldom paid out jackpot amounts .
Two of the important things about playing $5 and $10 is the comps you receive , and the playing conditions .
For example the $5 %26amp; $10 room at Trump Marina is nothing special . Same for Showboat. Harrah%26#39;s is a bit better . Bally%26#39;s and Resorts used to be nice but I haven%26#39;t been in awhile .
Harrah%26#39;s Property comps seem to be a bit slow at the moment . Borgata and Hilton might appreciate some $5 %26amp; $10 .
If you are staying at a casino , it might pay to play there . At the end of your stay you can mention you were playing $5 and $10 and ask if they can do something about your room charges for beverages , buffets , etc. ( Remember to charge everything to your room key .
