I hope to be visiting a friend in New Jersey (Fairfield area) and hope to drive to Brooklyn (I%26#39;d like to see the Jewish parts of Brooklyn) and Manhattan.
How dangerous is the Fairfield area?
How easy it is to get to NYC--Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn? Can you do it by subway or is it better to drive?
I have the mapquest directions but I thought I%26#39;d ask an insider.
Also, what is parking like in the boroughs? Is it unsafe to leave your car or is parking big money?
Is the Paterson area as unsafe as people say it is?
Please advise! Many thanks in advance.

The subway doesn%26#39;t go to NJ.
As for how safe the Fairfield area is, wouldn%26#39;t your friend be the best person to answer that?
You can drive into Manhattan and park - very expensive or take public transportation either train or bus into Manhattan and transfer to subway - more reasonable cost.
How easy to get to NYC from New JerseyYou%26#39;re right, I guess I could ask my friend... I thought I%26#39;d ask here to get different perspectives.
Thanks for the reply.
Fairfield NJ off Rt 46 is very safe place; I have many friends doing business in that area. One friend%26#39;s lawyer office is there too ...
Patterson is a bit different, depending on the area, but, in general, you can tell if there are lots of garbage at parking lots or street...
As to going to New York City, you may drive to Newport at Jersey City, and park at Center Mall of Newport and take PATH into the city, then take Subway to wherever you want to visit; it is very fast and convenient, and it is very safe now after 911, you see police everywhere ...
Driving into New York City is tough, especially for first time driver, you may have problem to get out of New York City, especially at night ... too many signs to watch and too many crowd, cars, ...etc. Parking is also another issue.

Hi Dotchesta,
Fairfield is a very safe area. In fact, I work in the next town over...Parsippany. There also some good restaurants in the Fairfield area, like Milan and Bacchus. However, I obviously don%26#39;t know what your taste is.
Looks like you already got some good advice on traveling into the city. To drive from Fairfield to the city is very simple, but I also wouldn%26#39;t recommend it for a first-timer.
Enjoy your trip!
