Trip Report, Showboat and Tropicana

My wife and I just spent 5 days in Atlantic City, two nights at Showboat for $59 rate (Total Rewards), and 3 nights at Tropicana for $79 with free buffet breakfast (Diamond Club rate). This was our first time at Showboat and it exceeded expectations. People were friendly and we had an excellent meal in Casa di Napoli. I%26#39;m Italian and there are some good cooks in my family, but the pasta dishes we had in Casa di Napoli were excellent. In the zuppa de pesce, the seafood was perfectly cooked, not over-cooked like so many places. Service was great. The Showboat was lively and had a lot of free entertainment. We also had the Gospel Brunch on Sunday at House of Blues, lots of southern food including fried chicken and biskets and gravy, pretty good, but overpriced at $29 per person. But it was fun....We went to the new bar at Resorts, 25%26#39;s, and they have a half-price happy hour (including top shelf), very good. They hired a famous designer to design the bar and the atmosphere is great...We took the advice on someone on this forum and went to Gardener%26#39;s Basin park for lunch one day, it%26#39;s about a mile from Showboat. We ate in the Old Ale house which is right on the water. You can take boat rides from the park, and there%26#39;s an Aquarium, which we didn%26#39;t go in. We enjoyed it and we%26#39;ll go back on warm days to sit by the water and have a few beers and lunch....We also checked out the Historical Museum which is right next to the Showboat. It%26#39;s free and shows memorabilia from Atlantic City. We also watched a film. Check it out if you stay at Showboat or near that end....At the Tropicana, we always have a great time and it continued. This trip we finally took in a movie at IMAX and saw Superman Returns with some scenes in 3D. The 3D effect is amazing, you%26#39;ve got to see it. The theater had perfect seating, you don%26#39;t have to get up when people walk by and you can%26#39;t get blocked form someone%26#39;s head. Highly recommended...We also saw a show, Viva Las Vegas II, which is a musical show and a bargain at $10 a ticket for Diamond Club members. Acrobatic dancers, fine singers, fantastic....As always, we had dinner at P J Changs, twice. The Mongolian Beef and Garlic Noodles are great dishes. This is a great, inexpensive restaurant....We found another Happy Hour, from 12 to 4 at Corkys...We also had the ribs and pulled pork dinner at Corkys, split it. Pretty good...We went over to Ballly%26#39;s one night for the excellent Happy Hour from 5 to 7 at the Blue Martini, which is a shiek bar on the casino floor....We went into the new Pier mall, but the top floor is not done, and that%26#39;s where the restaurants will be. It will be nice. The 2nd floor is a waste unless you%26#39;re rich, all expensive stores. The first floor is nice, check out Brookestone, great store for gadget lovers...Tropicano gave us free breakfast buffet all 3 days. It has really improved since a few years ago. We particularly liked the apple crisp. The buffet cost $16 so getting it comped was nice....As always, the Tropicana was lively although we do miss the old Palm bar (replaced by more slot machines), and the Top of the Trop, which is now used for special events only. They actually have too many slot machines now, and they eliminated some of the early afternoon entertainment. Still, if you are a first timer to Atlantic City, the best place to stay for newbies is the Tropicana because of the Quarter, with its 13 restaurants and the stores. It%26#39;s impressive and there%26#39;s a lot to take in. Our room in the Tropicano was newly renovated and we slept great on the new Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress--in fact, we liked it so much that as soon as we got back I went to Sears and bought one, it%26#39;s getting delivered this week. ...I took my Fuji digital zoom camera and got some great shots on the boardwalk. I%26#39;ll try to post some here once I reduce the sizes....We had a ball for 5 days and never got bored, and we only gambled 2 to 3 hours a day...The restaurants are really improving in Atlantic City, probably because the Borgata raised the bar with names like Wolfgang Puck. We had a lot of fun and can%26#39;t wait to go back, probably for a night or two in January.

Sounds like another Great Time in AC. You really got around which everyone should do if they are able to. I agree about the Imax as we went last trip, it was amazing. I stayed in the North Tower at The Trop and like you said the bed was awesome and the rooms really nice.

Were you able to get access to Diamond Jims Club at The Trop. They have Tables, Couches , TV%26#39;s, A nice bar and 2 buffet sections and best of all it%26#39;s all free and it%26#39;s very good food etc..

Thanks for the report with nice details. Good summary. I agree with just about every comment. Sorry to hear Top of the Trop is only for special events. It was a great spot. Glad you got around and had an interesting good time. Hopefully, your next stay will be comped. Looking forward to seeing some of your photos.

pandy44... Very nice report there. Glad you and your wife enjoyed yourselves immensely! So much good food and so much good entertainment in the City.... %26#39;tis a shame there are still people who cry ';there%26#39;s nothing to do but gamble!%26#39;... %26lt;sigh%26gt;

Looks like you two stayed in town with just about perfect weather; great for walking the boards and getting around! %26lt;grin%26gt;

I concur with Terminator%26#39;s opinion of the Diamond Jim%26#39;s club; good food, good booze, and great prices! (free)
