Went yesterday for the day. Drove all the way to the west end, parked in the Cove restaurant shack parking lot for $5 at about 1:30 pm. (Right next to the Jetty Motel, the last motel on the beach which is an ideal spot to stay for the location. If we had stayed overnite we would have liked to stay there altho the sign said No Vacancy, it must be pretty popular! ) We could have used metered parking but then would have had to feed a lot of quarters. Anyway, walked out to the beach and stretched out on the clean sand. Noticed little kids in what looked like a huge wading pool. What happened was, Hurricane Ernesto carved out a pool for the kids! The water was warmed by the sun and very warm and shallow for the kids to play in. Then in the afternoon when the tide came in, it filled up with fresh water!
But we went into the ocean right at the curve where the water was calm, at low tide. It was a little cool at first but very refreshing after a few minutes. Then we looked out and noticed pods of dolphins swimming south! I guess they were migrating. It was a beautiful sunny day. After sunning and another swim, my husband and I went looking for nice shells, beach glass (only found 1 small piece), quartz stones of different colors, and ';Cape May Diamonds'; which are small clear smooth quartz pebbles. There was no lifeguard but also no need for a beach tag, evidently.
Then about 5pm we left and headed back to Philadelphia,. We took Rt. 37 to Vineland and went to Marciano%26#39;s Italian Restaurant for dinner, which has very good, reasonably priced food and very friendly service.
It was a great getaway!
Cape May on 9/7 - not too late for swimming %26amp; dolphins!
Hi Cat! I was at Sunset Beach for the flag ceremony this past Wed., (the 6th), and the dolphins were there. It was just wonderful to see them playing so close to the shore.
Have an ice day!
