First of all, are you staying with friends or family in Elizabeth? The reason I%26#39;m asking is because Elizabeth is Not a very good area. If you are set on staying in Elizabeth, there is a direct train (NJ Transit) into Port Authority, NYC. It%26#39;s only about 20 minutes. As far as I know, there is no ferry to SI from Elizabeth, only from lower Manhattan. There was a ferry from Jersey City, NJ to midtown Manhattan, but I think that%26#39;s stopping. That was run by NY Waterways. If you have to travel from Elizabeth to SI, it%26#39;s not hard to drive. You just have to go over the Goethals Bridge and you%26#39;re there. (There can be traffic though.) Good luck, and write back if you have any other questions.

thank you very much for your detailed and informative answer.

we are planning to stay at the marriot/country inn hotel.

thanks to your advice we have found the I-95 road to SI.

is it a toll road?

Avi - According to this site, there%26#39;s a ';Country Inn %26amp; Suites By Carslon'; which is not owned by Marriott. Also in Elizabeth, there%26#39;s a Residence Inn and a Courtyard by Marriott. Do you know which one you%26#39;re staying at? You also didn%26#39;t answer my question re: why you%26#39;re coming to this area of NJ. It%26#39;s not a pretty area - all highways and factories (with the exception of one very large mall).. it%26#39;s actually considered the ';arm pit'; of Jersey! There are much nicer places to stay, not that much further away. Re: directions, 95 is the same as the NJ Turnpike, runs North and South. To get to Staten Island from Elizabeth, you need to go west on 278, over the Goethals Bridge. Best to get local directions to the bridge from your hotel (whichever that may be). If you want further advice, please write back. Just have to tell you: If you travel 15 minutes west of Elizabeth, you%26#39;ll hit some beautiful towns - Westfield, Short Hills, Millburn. I could recommend some really nice hotels. For example, there%26#39;s a Best Western of very high quality in the center of Westfield, a great upscale town with lots of shops and restaurants. It would make your trip much nicer.

OOPs, you need to go EAST on 278 from Elizabeth to get to SI.

i wish to thank you again for your precise and detailed answer.

we have considered all factors- and decieded to stay at the country inn.

from there we will drive to SI(toll road?) and take the SI ferry.

we hope to enjoy hospitality at least as the one you have shown in your attitude.

i am more than happy to conclude my trip to Newark and N.J.

we stayed at country inn by carlson, near new jersy gardens(great!moll- excellent bargains)

using i-95, gothald bridge and few miles on 278- we have reached in 20 minutes to the staten island ferry.

there is overthere a 6$ parking place, and in another 30 minutes you are in Manhattan.

we reccomend it very much- you will not find such hotels at that cost in N.Y.

THANK EVERYONE FOR THE TIPS!

I%26#39;m glad you enjoyed it..

just a few details about Elizabeth.. there is great development going on this town.. in matter of fact there is a new ferry under construction that will be serving to NYC commuters.. it%26#39;s a great town to invest in.. this is the only area that real estate has not gone bad.. many new businesses like Jersey Gardens, Ikea, Toys R US.. and many more.. there is a great university in Elizabeth..';Kean University'; and of course Union County Colllege, which is also a great college compared to other county colleges.. the Dept of Education has opened approx 5-6 new schools on 2005 and 06.. they are implementing good pilots that are attracting many other people to this area.. do you know that Elizabeth only charges 3% tax.. Elizabeth%26#39;s population is very diversed.. very city like.. Elizabeth is the only town in Union County that has 2 NJT train stations that go directly into NYC.. also there are many NJT Bus lines that go into NYC in approx 25mins.. the location of Elizabeth is very convenient.. Newark Airport is also on it%26#39;s borderline.. oh well to those who don;t know Elizabeth Today, should visit.. oh and Elizabeth also has ELMORA and ELMORA HILLS..
