Will be visiting my son in NW NJ from 10/12-10/17. Booked a hotel Pickwick Arms pod room for 10/13 2 nights. My question is what is the best way to get from NW NJ (Stillwater) to NYC. I will have a rental car; but, I am afraid of driving in NYC. I thought about driving to Weehawken/parking the rental/ taking boat to Manhattan/taking free bus to 51st and 5th/walking to 51st and 3rd (hotel). Does this sound like a good plan? What about the traffic in and around the ferry terminal in Weehawken? Any suggestions regarding least amount of car traffic even if it involves transportation mode changes would be appreciated (I hate driving in traffic!!). What do you think of my hotel choice? (I picked it because it was cheaper/all we need is clean and safe). I

The Weehawken ferry terminal is very close to the entrance of the Lincoln Tunnel. Traffic in that area is fairly intense.
I would suggest having your son drop you off at the NJ Transit train station. www.njtransit.com The closest to you is probably Mount Olive.
Martz martztrailways.com has commuter buses that go from Allamuchy, NJ to NYC
transportation help: NW NJ to NYCThanks broadwaynyc. How about the Hoboken boat terminals for traffic issues? The Martz bus sounds like a good option for time and convenience and I may take that option; but, I kindof like the sound of a boat tour unless it is too much hassel from traffic.
Anything along the water is going to be a pain to get to especially during the weekday. Also, parking isn%26#39;t free. The ferry terminal at Weehawken charges $7 for each day not per 24 hour.
I used to live in Ohio. The traffic there in no way prepares you for what it is here especially close to NYC.
Thank you for the advice. I am from Saginaw, Texas and currently living just outside of LA-we moved here 3 months ago. And, I know what you mean by ';in no way prepares you for this kind of traffic';. I thought the traffic in Dallas/Fort Worth was bad but it is nothing compared to southern CA. I do not want to spend my vacation time stuck in anything like that so I guess I will stick to the bus.
I saw the replies on the Weehawken Ferry to NYC. I will be cruising out of NYC in Nov. and not too exciting about finding NYC parking. Does the Weehawken ferry drop you off where the cruise ships are at the Pier?
Any other suggestions for parking. I believe the cruise line said there were parking arrangements at the pier but have to believe they would be very expensive.
The cruise ships that dock in NJ dock in Bayonne not Weehawken.
Sorry I misunderstood your post.
The Manhattan Cruise Terminal is at 55th Street.
The NY Waterway ferry to midtown dock at 39th Street.
The NY Waterway has free bus in Manhattan from their dock.
www.nywaterway.com
but the bus that would take you near the Manhattan Cruise Terminal only operates on weekdays. The actual schedule is on their website.
